Presumpscot Watershed Initiative

Water Quality Monitoring

Presumpscot River Watch (PRW) and Friends of Casco Bay (FOCB) are collaborating to oversee the water quality monitoring and evaluation components of the Presumpscot Watershed Initiative with the goal of developing a baseline dataset for water quality in the Presumpscot main stem and its tributaries. This task will supplement existing volunteer-based monitoring programs by using automated data sondes and spot sampling techniques to monitor for water quality parameters including turbidity, conductivity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, bacteria, nutrients, and macro-invertebrates. Site specific monitoring will occur in conjunction with on-the-ground implementation projects such as agricultural management improvements, stream crossings, and golf course environmental improvements. Water quality data will be posted on the Internet through the project’s geospatial database. At the conclusion of the project, water quality data will be summarized in the project’s Final Report.

Targeted Watershed Grant funds are being used to purchase, maintain, calibrate, and deploy data sondes and other monitoring equipment. Significant discounts for the equipment were provided by Pine Environmental.
